Thai Folk Crafts Immersion Program

The students from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore joined the immersion program provided by Social and Cultural Innovation Lab of School of Architecture and Design, KMUTT on December 2 – 22, 2019, learning Thai folk crafts intensively.

Asst. Prof. Nanthana Boonla-or (lecturer in Industrial Design program) gave a lecture focusing on Thailand’s bamboo wickerwork, basic patterns and foaming techniques, vernacular artefacts and meanings. NAFA students also produced their own bamboo products along with expert artisans who closely gave them advice.

Thus, the group visited craftsmen’s houses in Ang Thong, Queen Sirikit International Crafts Center in Ayudhaya and Khun Pranee’s house in Chonburi where they had learned basic weaving, “challenging the familiar, the lost and rare techniques/ bamboo woven objects in memories”.  Also, they had a chance to join the workshop focused on broom making and indigo crafts techniques in Sakon Nakhon province. The wisdom gained by the participants would be a basis for their work and design of wickerwork, and woodwork, which could be applied to other materials in order to continue to create in the future.
